National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has registered a marijuana drug to treat spasticity - excessive stiffness of muscles - in patients with multiple sclerosis. It is the first cannabis sativa medicine approved in Brazil.
Under the trade name Mevatyl, the product contains 27 mg / mL tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and 25 mg / mL cannabidiol (CBD). The drug is already approved in 28 other countries, including the United States, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland and Israel, where it is known as Sativex.
The drug is indicated for adult patients with severe to moderate spasticity related to multiple sclerosis who do not respond to other medicines and who demonstrate a good response to Mevatyl after an initial period of treatment.
Anvisa warns that the drug is not indicated to treat epilepsy nor can it be consumed by people under the age of 18. Until then, Anvisa only released the importation of Cannabis sativa based drugs purchased in other countries, but there was no product of this category registered in the country.
Next steps
From the registration of the drug by Anvisa, it is necessary to wait for the determination of the price of the product by the Executive Technical Committee of the Market of Regulation of the Market of Medicines (CMED), organ coordinated by Anvisa and composed of representatives of the ministries of Finance, Health, Justice , Development and Civil House. Only after this definition can the drug be started to be sold in the country.
It will be manufactured by GW Pharma Limited, UK, and distributed in Brazil by Beaufour Ipsen Pharmaceuticals.
