the carpenter
An old carpenter was about to retire. He told his boss his plans to quit the carpentry and building jobs to live a quieter life with his family.
Of course he would miss the monthly payment, but he needed retirement.
The owner of the company felt that he would lose one of his best employees and asked him to build a house as a special favor.
The carpenter consented, but over time, it was easy to see that his thoughts and heart were not at work. He did not engage in service and used inferior labor and raw material.
It was a pitiful way to end his career.
When the carpenter finished the work, the builder came to inspect the house and handed the door key to the carpenter and said,
- This is your home, it is my gift to you!
What a shock! What a shame! If he knew he was building his own house, he would have done it completely differently, he would not have been so relaxed.
Now she was going to live in a house made anyway.
So it is with us. We construct our lives in an absent-minded way, reacting more than acting, wishing to put less than the best.
In important matters we do not put our best effort into practice. Then, in shock, we look at the situation we created and see that we are living in the house we built. If we had known that, we would have done differently.
Think of yourself as a carpenter. Think about your home. Each day you hammer a new nail, place a frame, or lift a wall. Build wisely!
Even if you have only one more day of life, that day deserves to be lived graciously and with dignity. Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices made in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of the attitudes and choices you make today.
